The mission of our Family Medicine Residency Program is to provide comprehensive family medicine training in preparation for full spectrum practice, in a welcoming, supportive, and collegial learning environment. We are committed to the success of each resident and the community we serve.

Located at Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Nampa, ID, our unopposed Family Medicine Residency Program, welcoming our first class in July of 2025, will provide a comprehensive education, providing full-scope family medicine to our diverse and underserved community. Saint Alphonsus Medical Center - Nampa is a unique training environment, with a faculty of family physicians who serve all aspects of patient care, including outpatient longitudinal care, inpatient medicine, critical care, and obstetrics. Residents will also train under the guidance of specialists to gain a well-rounded education, preparing them to thrive in urban, rural, and critical access settings as independent physicians.

Saint Alphonsus Medical Center - Nampa is a 100-bed hospital that spans more than 240,000 square feet, features a complete diagnostic center, 6-suite surgical operating theatre, pre/post-operative holding and recovery rooms, 10-bed short stay observation unit, spacious and private patient rooms, and an 18-bed intensive care unit. Built with preventive and ambulatory health in mind, the facility accommodates the latest information technology, updated diagnostic and treatment technology, and an environment proved to reduce patient stress and recovery times.

A Message from Heidi Shields, MD, Program Director:

I am honored and excited to serve as the Program Director of the MSI - Saint Alphonsus Medical Center - Nampa Family Medicine Residency Program. I have spent a lifetime as a family medicine doctor, practicing in suburban Indianapolis, rural Maine, rural eastern Washington state, and Nampa, Idaho, I have spent the bulk of my career, twenty out of thirty years, in Nampa at what was first Mercy Hospital, and is now Saint Alphonsus. My passion for family medicine likely stems from my small-town upbringing, where people know, live, and care for each other over their lifetimes and where their parents and their children have or will often do the same. Everyone has a connection to almost everyone else. New people are welcomed into the community like distant cousins who have come home. A small town brings a sense of family.

As a family medicine physician practicing primarily in the same location for twenty years, I’ve had the opportunity, unique to family medicine, of taking care of multiple generations of the same family, from seeing them through the happy birth of a new baby I helped deliver; to caring for them through medical crises that brings family members to the hospital; and guiding them through the death and dying process of a beloved family member. Working with the patient through all levels of their care, through many years of their lives, creates a deeper meaning and trust between doctor and patient, becoming a treasured relationship that builds over the years. When you know everything about your patient without looking at the chart, and your patient knows and trusts you as a doctor, that is when the care of the patient truly rises to its highest level. This is the kind of physician I want to train, in the residency program that I am excited to build.

Welcome!

Heidi Shields, MD
